TYPE 1: Energy Management, Transmission, and Distribution
Definition:
Construction and/or expansion of grid-scale energy storage facilities (e.g., chemical, thermal, mechanical, and electrochemical). Construction and expansion of infrastructure that transports low carbon electricity, including direct connections to low carbon sources and networks sections where the electricity mix meets the standards. Installation of smart-meters and other technologies that improve grid efficiency.
Standards:
Projects related to low-carbon electricity are eligible where low-carbon electricity comprises more than 60% of the newly installed generation capacity over the trailing 5-year period. Low-carbon electricity refers to any power source listed in Project Class A of this Appendix, or where GHG emissions from the electricity produced is below the threshold value of 133 gCO2e/kWh. Given that the electrification in the low and lower middle-income countries is critical to decarbonization, the above standard shall not apply for projects in these countries until 5 years after the effective date of this Agreement, unless Participants agree otherwise. Such projects are subject to Article 43. Construction and expansion of infrastructure projects that transports electricity are eligible so long as they are not directly connecting fossil fuel power plants to the grid. Grid efficiency project documents must credibly demonstrate that energy efficiency is the primary purpose of the project.
